Calum Pairman.

Web Developer and Programmer.

about me

I'm a Website Developer, working mostly with WordPress, PHP, JavaScript, and SASS. I enjoy programming as a hobby, and have extensive experience in Java in my own projects. I've always been very interested in the process of video game development; I have some basic experience working with the Unity engine and C#, and continue to work on my skills and projects in this area.

Originally from Troon, Ayrshire, I graduated from Heriot-Watt University in 2020 with a BSc in Computer Science. I discovered my passion for all-things-computer when I was at school, and it was a natural choice for me to study and pursue a career in this field. My interests aren't just in software either; I enjoy building, upgrading, and generally experimenting with computer hardware as a hobby.

I'm a fast and avid learner; alongside my studies, I've expanded my programming skills significantly just by working on my own projects, and I always find myself learning new things every time I code. I have strong problem-solving, research, and analytical skills, plus excellent interpersonal skills that allow me to fit in well in any team.

Beyond that, my work experience includes a variety of roles across the construction, hospitality, and retail sectors, giving me a solid understanding of how essential it is to provide outstanding customer service, and a high quality of product.

education

Heriot-Watt University

2015-2020

BSc Computer Science

Modules included object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, software and interaction design, web design and programming, database management, and artificial intelligence.

In third year, I played a vital role in a group project, which involved developing a management system for a fictional bike rental company. Working in an agile manner, we worked through the entire software development lifecycle, from the initial stages of design, to implementation and testing, and compiled regular reports on our progress. We then finished the project by presenting our software to staff and students in an ‘expo'.

volunteering

Marr College

Troon, Ayrshire

2014 - 2015

IT/Classroom Assistant

In my final year at school, I spent much of my week volunteering as an assistant to the school’s IT technician, and as a classroom assistant in several first and second-year computer science classes. In my time with the school’s IT technician, I would help to diagnose and fix computer-related issues for members of staff, as well as provide general support and maintenance of the school’s IT systems. While volunteering in classes, I would help the teacher to prepare and give lessons, help pupils with their work, and even had the opportunity to present some lessons myself. I found this to be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience that helped to develop my knowledge and presentation skills.
